Abstract
Jargon, one of the characteristics of scholarly writing, presents a challenge for translators in fulfilling the intended meaning of the original author. This intended meaning transcends what the equivalent word in the target language denotes in a literal sense. Skopos theory provides a language to explain decisions made by the translator to justify the reasoning for selecting one word over another, based on its function, coherence, and fidelity to the source text. This thesis illustrates such reasoning through a translation from Arabic into English, along with a commentary on a chapter titled ﺛﻘﺎﻓﺔاﻟﺼﻮرة – “The Culture of the Image” from the Saudi cultural critic Abdullah Al Ghathami’s book اﻟﺜﻘﺎﻓﺔاﻟﺘﻠﻔﺰﯾﻮﻧﯿﺔ - Television Culture (2005). The commentary shows examples with Skopos-based comments, clarifying translation choices between general and specific interpretations of the denotative meaning of jargon.
